Course Syllabus

Honors English 8

Course of Study
Honors English 8 is a general survey English course, with an emphasis on poetry, novels, and grammar.

Texts
Elements of Language, second course
Possible Novels:  Diary of Anne Frank, The House On Mango Street, To Kill A Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, The Neverending Story

Grading Policy
Students are expected to complete all work to the best of their ability.  If, for any reason, there is a problem with an assignment, please be sure to see me as soon as possible.
I will accept late work, but 10% will be deducted for each day that it is late.

All homework is due at the BEGINNING of the next day's class.  Homework turned in after the first 5 minutes of class will be considered late.

If you are absent, you may make up any work that you have missed for full credit. (unless you are suspended out of school, skipping class, or considered truant)  You have the same number of days that you were absent to make up the work that you missed.

It is your responsibility to find out what work you missed!!!!!!!

Cheating and/or plagiarism will not be tolerated!!!!  You have cheated or plagiarized when you have turned in work that you did not do yourself.  This may include copied answers to questions, copied passages of written work, or using other people's original ideas in your written work without using proper citation.  Cheating or plagiarizing an assignment will result in no credit being given for that assignment, along with potentially failing the course as a whole.

Classroom Expectations
1.  Be Prompt.
Be on time, both physically to the classroom as well as with all assignments

2.  Be Prepared.
Have all needed materials at the start of class, as well as the proper mental attitude

3.  Be Respectful.
Respect other people's ideas, as well as their property

4.  Be Heard.
True discussion and learning comes when everyone shares their ideas and opinions.
5.  Be Nice.
You may not always agree with everyone, and you might not even like them.  Be nice anyways.

In addition, all school rules are always in effect.

Practical Classroom Rules

Snacks and Drinks are permitted in the classroom, but please be courteous to others.  Do not bring anything that is smelly or unnecessarily messy, and make sure you clean up after yourself.

Cell Phone Policy:
You may not make or receive any phone calls or texts during class.  You may not have your phone out or use it in any way during tests or quizzes.  You should not be using your phone when the teacher is talking, or when fellow students are presenting.

When you are working independently, you may use your phone to listen to music as long as you have headphones and no one else can hear it.

Students are encouraged to use their cell phone to take pictures of directions written on the board.  Students are also encouraged to use the calendar app or other planner app to keep track of assignments.  I recommend using the Evernote app if you do not already have a planning system in place.
